HSG and the Global Glass Conservation Alliance Encourage Windshield Repair on America Recycles Day
HSG, the leader in driving windshield repair versus replacement for the insurance industry, and a member of the Global Glass Conservation Alliance (GGCA) reminds consumers that, while recycling glass bottles and jars is commonplace, the glass used in automobiles cannot be recycled.
"Recycling laminated glass, which is used in 100 percent of all windshields in passenger cars, is not possible," said Mike Boyle, president of the GGCA. "Consumers think the glass is being recycled. Unfortunately it ends up going to landfills. The best way to avoid this is to repair, rather than replace, laminated glass."
Nationally, millions of windshields are replaced each year. Automobile windshield replacement involves the removal and discarding of the broken windshield. With approximately 25 lbs of glass waste per windshield, this takes up precious landfill space. A considerable amount of energy is also used to produce glass, taking 15.2 million BTU's of energy to produce one ton of glass.
The process of repairing, rather than replacing, auto glass keeps the glass in place. This helps prevent the damage from spreading and makes the damage much less noticeable. This is done without removing, replacing and ultimately discarding the glass, which will also save down time and will also save money. Repair also retains the structural integrity of the glass and maintains the original factory seal.
"HSG continues to be at the forefront of encouraging consumers to choose repair over replacement whenever possible," said Paul Gross, president and CEO of HSG. "As an original founding member of the GGCA, I applaud its efforts in promoting environmentally-responsible business practices, and their support of repair versus replacement in the auto glass industry."
HSG and GGCA hope the observance of America Recycles Day this November 15, will continue to bring awareness to glass repair and restoration and it encourages consumers to find alternatives to reduce the amount of laminated glass that ends up in landfills each year.
